Principal's Garden Project serves more than a meal
Mr Sydney Teme, principal of Ramosadi Primary School, has proven his creative leadership through the establishment of a community gardening project linked to the school where he has been principal for 10 years.
Community members and school learners work in the garden, which also provides needed nutrition. At Ramosadi, 9 Teachers serve 250 learners from Grade R-6.
Unemployment is high in the school's Township. More than half of the learners are destitute or orphaned, partly because of the destruction of the Aids pandemic and partly because of parents who have abandoned their children because of having to seek employment opportunities elsewhere.
Sydney has been resourceful in generating much needed income for his under-funded school - renting facilities to church and community groups, and attracting volunteers and in-kind donations.
Now the school is part of a team of international likeminded partners who applied for a grant to use mobile technology to beat off the woes of illiteracy.
